Highlands Tequila Tour

Highlands Tequila Tour

A densely-packed trip is designed for somewhat more experienced or dedicated Tequila aficionados. It’s the ideal follow-up to alumni of our Valley of Tequila tour. On our Highlands Tequila tour, we delve even further into the world of Tequila, and in-depth Tequila knowledge.

Los Altos de Jalisco (the highlands region) may have gotten into the Tequila game relatively late (at the beginning of the 20th century), but it’s where most of today’s premium tequilas are made. Our Highlands Tequila tour is built around some of the oldest Tequila-producing families in the region, and we learn directly from members of these families – sometimes well into the evening hours!

The red, iron-rich soil and cooler climate of the Highlands mean the blue agave takes even longer to grow and once matured, are larger and sweeter than their Valley counterparts. The town of Arandas is our base in the Highlands, and we also visit Atotonilco El Alto, and often Jesús María as well.

Like all our experiences, the Highlands Tequila tour features hands-on, experiential learning. You’ll engage your five senses daily in brick ovens, fermentation rooms, barrel houses, and sanctuary-like tasting rooms.Highlands Tahona Horse

And if you’ll forgive some geekiness: the Highlands Tequila tour has a strong emphasis on tahona production – the two-ton stone wheel historically used to crush cooked agave. All but extinct in the modern Tequila industry, the tahona makes frequent appearances on this tour. From its traditional use at La Alteña and Siete Leguas (where it’s still pulled by a mule team!), to innovative modern applications at G4 and Suerte, there is no other way to see more tahona in two days!
